6 Inch Red, White and Blue Morrison Pepper Mill

Happy 4th of July!

I hope that you are having a great Independence Day and get to spend it with family and friends. I was thinking of what some of our founding fathers were saying in 1776. Yup, these quotes are 240 years old.

Benjamin Franklin at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, “We must indeed all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”

Nathan Hale, sometime before he was hung on September 22nd, 1776, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

John Adams, could these words be any truer today? “The happiness of society is the end of government” and “Fear is the foundation of most government.”

Thomas Paine, “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of men and women.”

The Patriotic Mill

I just made one of these mills. I think they are very colorful and patriotic. The mill pictured is a 6 inch red, white and blue Morrison pepper mill. The mill starts out as 1/16 inch Birch veneer that gets dyed and then glued together. Yup, 1/16 inch layers of red, white and blue repeating over and over. When I start working it on the lathe it’s 49 layers thick.
