My 5K yesterday

So yesterday I did my first 5K road race in over 30 years. Yup, it would be an understatement to say it’s been a few years since I last did a race. Let me also be right up front and say that I didn’t run the race, I walked. You might say that I’m a little out of shape although I frequently joke that round is a shape. Also, I’m a woodturner and for the most part, all of the shapes that I make are round. However, one of the goals that I have set for myself this year is to be less round than what I was when I started the year. To that end, since the start of the year I’ve lost 15 pounds and have had to move to the next hole on my belt. I have gained the ability to walk up flights of stairs without getting winded nearly as much. I’ll take that tradeoff.

So yesterday’s 5K was Friends on the 4th 5K in Winthrop, Maine. This was a very well organized race. Starting with check-ins, the race itself and the handing out of prizes afterward. The course was well laid out and there were people at every turn making it virtually impossible to go the wrong way. The spectators cheered everyone on, even the guy that was close to bringing up the rear. It was a very pleasant time had by the whole family. As I said before, I was close to one of the last people to finish, and that includes my own family. My goal was to do the whole thing and I did it in 58 minutes. I would like to say that I’m proud of our girls who ran the race (they both did quite well) and my wife who walked with me (she actually finished ahead of me). And to thank her cousins who came out and walked with us. There isn’t an official time for me because I was a walker and not one of the running participants. Next year. Now to start training to actually run a 5K in October.

Today’s turning

Today’s turning is an 8-inch Walnut Haynes pepper grinder. The Haynes shape came about one winter day, a few years back. I was outside breaking the ice and icicles off from the eaves of my house and I realized that a droplet of water would be a great shape. So if you turn the pepper grinder upside down you will see my version of a water droplet. Complete from the moment when the droplet is about to break free and becomes very elongated (everything below the head) to the moment when the droplet has just broken free (the actual head).
