My first woodcarving

RSS

As if woodturning isn’t enough to keep me busy, recently I’ve been learning how to carve wood. Those of you that have known me for a while know that I have carved on my woodturnings for a few years now. So it might seem strange to hear me say that I’m learning to carve wood. I should actually say that I’m learning to carve wood using only hand tools that don’t have any power behind them other than me. Any one that knows me knows that I like power tools. Love or crave power tools would be more like it. Tim “the toolman” Taylor’s got nothing on me. More POWER! Arrr Arrr Arrr.

Anyways my friend Steven Hatch has been teaching me how to carve using hand tools, a knife and a few gouges. So here is a picture of my first hand carved piece.

My first carving

This little guy measures 1 3/8″ x 3″ and was carved entirely by using a carving knife and a micro v-tool for most of the hair and beard. I’m thinking about painting him but haven’t decided on the colors yet. What do you think of him?
